Comments: I was an 203MD North Vietnamese linguist assigned to the 6990th Security Group from Oct. 1969 to Feb. 1972. Flew as backender on RC135's from Kadena AB, Okinawa and RC130's from Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. For almost 29 years I have had no contact with any of my old comrades who flew on those perilous missions. You never knew if your next mission might be your last. With the AAA, SAM's, Migs and flying over Laos, Cambodia and the Gulf of Tonkin in such close proximity to the borders of North Vietnam and China; it was not advisable to fall asleep at your radio console. Thank God for coffee and cigarettes to keep you awake if not to calm your nerves. I just became a member of the computer world within the past 6 months (it took me long enough) and have enjoyed finding the different USAFSS web sites. It is great that our story is finally being told. I salute all my Silent Warrior Comrades. It was a pleasure to fly with you.

Comments: Read about the C-130 going down many years ago. I am a former 202 who worked in the air movements branch at AFSCC in San Antonio. Your web site is great. All of us worked hard and knew how important the work we were performing was. I will never forget the Cuban Missile Exercise and we had did everything ,but fire the gun during that exercise. Thanks for recogizeing us silent warriors.

Comments: Larry: I would like to be put on the Propwash Gang list so that I can receive old/new/updates/info on activities, etc. having to do with the airborne program. I was a Chinese linguist from 1960-64, and a Vietnamese linguist from 1964-81. Airborne background: On flight status for 11 yrs 6 mos between March, 1962 and July, 1977. Flew RC-130's with Det 1 6927th RSM, 6988th RSM, 6924th RSM/Scty Sq, and 6990th Scty Sq/Gp, logging 3423.5 hours. Also flew three missions logging 30 hours on the EC-121's of VQ-1 from Atsugi while in the 88th. Flew RC-135's with the 6990th Scty Sq/Gp, logging 5200.1 hours. (Plus training). *Form 5 (flt record) indicates 8763.3 total flying hours, but checking it mission by mission I can only find 8653.3 hours. Possibly I have lost a page somewhere. Thanks for your trouble, Ed

Comments: Greetings from a former Army 98J (Noncommunications Interceptor Analyst). Putting oneself in harm's way is never an easy thing. Those people who came before and after me who have done the intel collection job, I salute them. Having been in the 1-K zone was a piece of cake compared to flying into enemy airspace in order to gather emission or other data. May the intelligence professionals never be forgotten!

Comments: I was at Korat RTAFB, Thailand, 69-70. We had the Batcat and College Eye Squadrons flying over the Ho Chi Minh trail and other important missions. Their days were long and tiring but they provided invaluable intelligence. They suffered losses when 2 of the Connies went down in less than a year. These were gallant warriors, answering their nations call. I was proud to know a few of them.

Comments: I retired from the Air Force in 1994 but as a defense contractor, I stay real close to the blue suiters. I'm working in the 480 IG at Langley currently. I joined the service in 1972 and was stationed at Shu Lin Kou AS as an MB for my first assignment. Then on to OSan as a QB, then Oki to fly a bit. After that, it was OTS and on to Hellenikon where I became a BLE (Box Lunch Eater) on the Whiskey and Victor models. I was a part of all the transitions from USAFSS, to ESC, to AFIC, to AIA; sigh... I'm very impressed with this site!! and all the links!! Very Cool.

Comments: I remember that day in 1958 vividly since I was on duty and we were tracking that A/C when it was shot down. I copied the morse and also the pilot talking.[I subbed for the linguists when they needed a break] We were told that the pilot was lured by a stronger signal from Batumi instead of the beacon from Kars!on the same freq. Our mission at Karamursel was to warn them if the migs got too close but it happened so fast. EVERY September since then I remember!

Comments: Excellent site devoted to a topic that has been too long ignored. I'm looking for some help. By way of background, I helped get the Army RU-8D into NVP at Ft. Meade. I'm writing a book on the mission a/c used for SIGINT over the years and I am looking for hardcopy photos of USAF a/c used for SIGINT to be included in the book. I have photos of the EC-47N/P/Q used in Vietnam, but would like to get a picture of every RC-135 variant as well as the older RB-29/36/45/47/50 and RC-47, C-130/131s SIGINT A/C. I'm not interested in the photo-recce birds. I'll pay any repro costs as well as postage. All photos used will be properly credited. Thanks for your help. Dennis Buley

Comments: As the creator and webmaster of the Silent Warriors web site I do not believe I have ever signed the guestbook. It seems that perhaps I should. I came on the internet in November of 1995. My first attempts at searching the internet were to try to find out something about those people who had served in the US Air Force reconnaissance business. I had an intense - a terrible need - to make some contact with my past Air Force experience. At first there was very little information. Then as time went by more and more information started cropping up and soon I decided to create a web site honoring those men who had served in the Air Force intelligence business. The site was not initially intended to be just for reconnaissance flyers but for anyone who had served in the intelligence business. I started making contact with former servicemen and soon there was enough information and photos to create a nice web site. It has been both a pleasure and an honor for me to be part of this experience. I am truly grateful that my son, who is really computer literate, helped me learn to build a web site. It has been a very rewarding experience. My own career with the Air Force started when I joined USAF in August of 1959. After basic training I was assigned to Syracuse University to learn the basic Russian language. From Syracuse I went to Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas and from there I was assigned to Karamursel Air Station across the Sea of Marmara from Istanbul in Turkey. While I was at Karamursel I found out about the opening of the first RC-135 outfit with an opportunity to go to Brize-Norton, England. So I volunteered, along with several others, and was one of two who were accepted into the program from my base. I felt quite lucky until I arrived at Goodfellow once again and found out that we were not going to Brize-Norton, England but to Fairbanks, Alaska. I was very disappointed and tried to get out of going but all I succeeded in doing was to have my extension cut from 20 months to nine months. So I went through the training at Goodfellow, traveled to Stead Air Force Base outside Reno, Nevada and went through the Combat Survival School there. All will know that this encompassed training in Prisoner of War Training, Escape and Evasion Training, and Survival. After Stead I finally arrived at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska and went through the Arctic Survival Training program there. During my stay at Eielson I flew 49 aerial reconnaissance missions and got out of the Air Force in May, 1964. One could not have served at a more critical period in the history of our nation because during that period of time the US and the Soviet Union stood toe to toe in a nuclear standoff on several occasions. During my tour of duty Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union, near Sverdlovsk, and was tried as a spy. An RB-47 was shot down in the Barents Sea and two crewmen were captured and kept in prison in Moscow until their release six months after. It was a very exciting and dangerous period of our history and I am proud to have played even a small part.

Comments: Was reading the April 2000 copy of the VFW magazine and noted an article under "SECURITY" page 10, that notes: U.S. GI's were POW's in Russia during the Cold War. Of intrest to me was the mention of a RB-29 shot down on June 13, 1952 off Japan ..."The memoir states that a "Bush and Moore" were held and possibly beaten to death at the Siberian city of Khabarovsk. Records indicate that Maj. Samuel Bush commanded that B-29 and Master Sgt. David L. Moore was a crewmember." I can't help but wonder if others survived.

I also flew on several of the search and rescue missions looking for our sister ship, Rivet Amber, which was lost at sea a few months later. I am glad to see the effort to pull togeather information and background on the missions and lives of those who served the nation during Hot and Cold times. As a former C130 aircrew member with the 7406th SUPPRON (Rhein Main AFB) from 1958 to 1961, I appreciate the tribute and recognition you have given to the crew of 60528. Although I had been in the squadron for a short time and only vaguely knew the crew, I'm sure they, like all the other Silent Warriors felt that they were "just doing their job" and never expected to be publicly recognized or even see acknowlegement of their accomplishments. Thanks for the time and effort you have put into this very informative website.

Comments: Hi Airlee, Wow! - This is a great site! It is great to see some of the old stuff finally hitting the light of day. I made it to IFEL in New Haven '60-'61, Goodbuddy '61-'62 (ALK/AZK) and became an A203X1-2, Det.1 6927th RSM '62-'63, and Det.1 6988th SS '63-'64, all flying C-130Bs in Sun Valley II. Had great times (a few shaky ones too!). I'm hoping to find more of our old "gang" as I look around. Have found a few already. I will visit again and again! Best of everything in the world to all the old "Silent Warriors"!!! Ron Stockton Derby, KS, USA

Comments: Was assigned to the 2d RSM from 3 Jan 52 to 15 Jul 54 - Worked in Personnel. Russ Parks was a good friend - Made SSgt & TSgt while assigned there. I "ran" with Ken Gentry (DF) - G McKenzie and Larry Stracqualursi were good friends. MSgt Eugene V Walls was my "mentor" along with his wife Penny. Married a German national and lost my clearance - Tried for 5 years to get back in - all to no avail - However, as it was it worked out well - Made CMSgt on 16th year and stayed 28.5 yrs in AF. Interesting note: I was 1st Sgt of the 360th Recon (later Tactical Electronic Warfare) Sq who, along with USAFSS using X&Y consoles, took over the listening post mission from the Army. Used to go to the USAFSS Mess, across from the vietnam training activity quite often. 2d RSM was my "growup" time in the Air Force and my military career was directly related to the professional folks I worked with - LtCol Jack P Van Tuil (sp?), Commander, and Major Erwin Labby (retired as an 0-6)Executive Officer, helped me particularly - Great Officers, NCOs and Unit!!

Comments: Oustanding site and what an impressive library of pictures and articles. My very good friend, Ron Kriegel, is a contibutor and I applaud his efforts over the years, along with others, to keep the "memories" alive and to perpetuate the respect we all should have for those who died to keep this a "free" country. My term in the USAF was not as "involved" as many of you but I served my country and proud of it! As a memeber of a Combat Support Sg (back in the C-119 days) and later an Air Evac unit flying "Herc's" I can appreciate the sorted experiences that I have read. Many photo's will go into my library to occaionally bring back those memories. Again, thanks to Ron and all those who have contributed to this great tribute to those still around and the ones that never came back. Anyone have old C-119 pics? Don Kukla SSgt. Comments: Hi. MyfriendMissy forwarded this page to me as well as another filled with wonderful pictures. I wanted to take a moment and tell you how much I enjoyed your photography as well as the commentary on this particular page. Although I was not personally involved in any type of warfare, I felt drawn into the lives of those who were, simply by viewing your page. Thank you for the trip through time, and the chance to view things as they were. And thanks to all of you who spent the time and effort to save those of us who stayed home. legggs

Living quarters were one step above field level units. But I was young then so what the hell? Europe was inexpensive, gas was .10/gal, beer was a nickel and life was filled with dreams and promise and anticipation. I feel privledged and lucky to have served in the USAFSS as it was populated by some very talented and dedicated people.

With the '88th, was Bat 2 on RC-130BII's flying from Osan AB. Also flew some missions from Itazuke AB, Japan, on EC-121D's, including "Triple Nickel" (T/N 53-555), now retired to the Air Force Museum, Dayton, OH. Stopped there recently in a salute to that once- thundering matron and a few moments of reflection. Comments: My son told me about this webpage. I wasn't certain if I wanted to look at the shootdown or not. I was scheduled to be on that plane and was pulled off at the last minute becaus my wife was pregnant with our youngest and was having some trouble. We were a detachment out of Darmstadt at the time and had to go to Darmstadt to get confirmation or denial of my request for leave. The plane left on Sunday, I went to Darmstadt on Monday (and was denied leave) and the plane went down on Tuesday the day before my wifes 25 birthday. That was to have been my first tdy to Turkey. I had flown in some of the other missions and had flown in the RB-50's as well. Capt. Tarbox was the Ops officer then and put me on the team to inventory the personal belongings of the guys who were killed. That was a rough assignment for me. I had borrowed some money from my roommate to make the trip on, and had to pay it back to his estate. One of the guys had a large amount of cash salted away in a dirty sock. I still remember a lot of the guys I was stationed with then; Bergeron, Tom Tennant, Carron, and so on. I stayed in the Airborne program, and flew at Eielson, Omaha, Kadena. I helped Capt. Doyle Larson set up the unit in Eielson. In fact, there were only two of us (B.W. Posey and I) who had previous airborne experience. We wrote all the SOP's for operations to get us started with and set up the stanboard team. I remember a lot of those guys too. Eugene Miller, John Minion, Gripka, Posey, etc. All great guys. The shootdown on Sep. 2, bothered me more that I ever wanted to admit. I finally wound up in a mental hospital. I took therapy for two years and was told by my counselor that I had delayed traumatic stress syndrome. I guess 17 years of Security Service had taken a bigger toll that I realized. I'm glad to see the memorial set up, even if they did make a small error in the reconstruction of the C130. They put in a four bladed prop, and we only had three bladed props. I had about a 150 headaches from the whine of those damned things so I should know. Enough about me, though. There were a lot of unsung, forgotten heroes who quietly went about their duties, even in some really hairy conditions. (Try flying the slot of Kamchatka at night with a Mig pacing you for a thrill.) Keep up the good work. Carl G. Rasnic USAF/Ret carlichek@lycosmail.com

Had limited contact with 6988th as a second echelon type in OPR-MC at 6921 SW. Basically, I had the dubious distinction of writing report summaries on the unit's activities every month. My really good times with USAFSS were at 6912 RSM in Berlin (59-61). Keep up the good work!

Comments: 1960 to 62 with the 6927th at Onna Point on Okinawa as a 292. The 27th has a web page and we have reunions yearly. You can find it under the unit from Taiwan. Great page, very informative. Most of us in USAFSS were young and in our own little coocoons. It's interesting to find out the range of experiences different guys had. Look forward to hearning from others.

Comments: I just found out about you today from Jack O'Reilly who is part of the 15th/6922nd RSM Search Committee headed by Jim Bramwell. I received a card from him in the mail today about the annual reunion, the next of which will be in San Antonio. I was very pleased to hear about the group. In September or October of 1956, I was bumped at the last minute from an RB-50 mission that disappeared over the Sea of Japan. All of my friends were among the 26 or so men aboard. I have recently begun trying to find some newspaper account of this incident, and have not been able to do so. The list of downed aircraft implies that this plane was shot down, and I would sure like to know more about that. I would appreciate any information your members may have. Sincerely, Duane Kolilis

I found this page interesting, since I was the RECCE Officer for Europe from 1977 - 1980 as well as the Ops Officers for our European sites. I was just searching for info on C-130s (ABCCC) in particular for a briefing I'm working on and came across the memorial to our friends shot down in Soviet Armenia. Thanks for the memories and I guess I'll have to rejoin the Association, though at my age the only things I find out is which of my friends is gone. Cheers!

Spent 21 of those in the flying program: EC-47s in 'Nam (1968-69) and Combat Apple out of Kadena (1969-72). Remainder was all RC-135 from Offutt with many, many TDYs in addition to tours in Alaska and Germany (Ramstein/ESE). Bowed out with 10,000+ hours in hogs. All this leads up to question: what do I need to do to become more closely affiliated with the PW Gang? Feel this is ideal way to definitely "keep in touch" with many of the old airborne gang. Comments: Airlee, Your site is coming along fine. You need some more pictures of the Far East, especially Japan. You also need some pictures of the RB-50's and C-130Bs.

Comments: No words are really sufficient enough to express the feelings in my heart for all Warriors and their families. Suffice to say "Thank You!" And please know that there are a whole lot of us who really appreciate what you have gone through for us.
