I'm a past member of USAFSS having been stationed with the 2nd RSM, 6911th RGM 1952-1955 and 6910thRGM 1960-1962. Subsequent assignments with 6970th at Suitland Hall, Hq USAFSS, Detachment 1, 1960th at Nord, Greenland (Project Cross Talk), 6931st RGM Iraklion, Crete. Subsequent assignments were with the Strategic Air Command Reconnaissance Center at HQ SAC, Offutt AFB, Nebraska working with RC-135s, SR71s, U2s and BQM34 Drone programs. Finally, I served as a Command and Control Superintendent as a Operations Team member of the Commander In Chief Europe (CINCEUR) Airborne Command Post (SILK PURSE) and the National Emergency Airborne Command Post (NEACP) Andrews AFB, Maryland. I retired from the USAF in 1977. Now actively employed with NASA at Johnson Space Center, Houston. My friends, we lost more than "one" plane over there, how many "missions" do you think we flew? what about the "MIA's" from this war? (cold war, yes but...we still have many people "missing") Incidently, all my records were "burned", and as late as 1993 and 1994 the "6913th RSM" was a fabrication of our imagination. "It didn't exist", we made up these stories! these are "direct" quotes from some "Very Important People" in Washington.your comments, please. |

All of you BATS and others who flew the EC-47N/P/Q or the EC-121 or the RC-130A & BII or the RC-135's == We made it off and were able to walk home! I have never jumped out of a good airplane or a dying one! We went through survival schools until we could eat every edible thing that walked, crawel or just layed there! We learned how to lie and tell any bad guy everything but the truth! We flew where they said we could not go without coming back in pieces! We heard and saw so much that each of us could write an encyclopedia! We fixed things that broke so fast that the brogan was handier than a screwdriver! We traveled where no intelligent person would go! We survived the polutants of bad water in such places that we cannot even pronounce them! We flew or we sat and heard what the bad guys thought about Bonanza, I Love Lucy and other dynamic intelligence! We followed our downed fliers and told everyone where they went and were told, "That is okay, we will get them back!" So, where are the POW's & MIA's that we knew about down to the very camps and the very cities and the very countries? Ladies and gentlemen, you did your jobs and you should be proud! We were young and we survived the intelligence society with our honor intact! It is the politicians who are dishonorable, not us! We did our jobs and we did them well! Stand tall and stand proud, because you are the men and women who saved the world from Communism! You are the ones who saved the world from itself many times! God Bless all of us one and all! I was also with the 6994th in Saigon and the det 2 in DaNang, 12/70 through 12/71. Through JC's page and the Chicksands sight from Bedford, England, i have hooked up with two people who remembered me. Jim Hart and i started talking and ended up finishing each others' sentences about the big air strike on the Michalean Rubber Company's Chupp Plantation. And from the Chicksands page i hooked up with Ernie Robinson, who i went to tech school with. This availability to meet old friends and new ones also, is just absoutely fantastic. I spent several years stationed at a USAFSS Transec Squadron in Wiesbaden, Germany. On many occasions I visited Wiesbaden Air Base which contained many of your people, SAC in front and USAFSS in back. It was our job to know who and what you were but not to communicate that fact to you. Many of the planes you flew would have been rejected by bush pilots. Every time I saw one of your craft taking off or returning, I stood in place and visibly said a prayer for the crew. I did not care who was watching or what they may have thought. While I do not qualify for membership in the organization I would like to add my thanks to all those who do. Thanks for the great web site and the links. Served at Shu Lin K'ou AS (6987th RSM), Taiwan Nov '59-Nov '62; became an instructor in the A20371Z (Chinese translation) at Goodfellow, Jan '63-Apr '65; thence to Bangkon and Det 3 of the 6925th SS (later Det 3, 6922 SS) from May '65-Jan '67; back to Shu Lin K'ou until July '68. Joined the 6990th SS at Kadena in Jul '68, serving until Jul '70; thence to Hawaii and Pac Security Region Hqs until my retirement in Feb '75. Started my civilian career, after finishing my education, with the Defense Intelligence Agency in Jul '79 and retired again in Dec '97. I was a 292X1 with the 6981st SCTY GP (Elmendorf) from Dec '67 to Nov '69, then to survival school at Fairchild AFB (WA), some SEA equipment schools at Goodbuddy and Kelly, then PACAF jungle survival school at Clark, and on to Tan Son Nhut with the 6994th Scty Sqn. I flew 270(or thereabouts -- lost my "hero cards")missions from Feb '70 to Dec '71 on EC-47s of the 360th TEWS (also some TDY with the 361st at Phu Cat, plus the Det. at NKP.) When I called it quits, I was one of 6 or so IRO's with the 6994th who were training ARVN (yep, not VNAF)operators as part of "Vietnamization". I've wanted to do a serious history of the "Electric Goon" for 20+ years now. This may give me the "link" I need. I have a lot of the TEWS histories from Maxwell (AFHRSC)plus some crash records, etc., but would sure like to hook up with other EC-47 troops to complete the tale. For what it's worth, AIA (former USAFSS) has been just about WORTHLESS in providing any meaningful info, despite the FOIA and the fact that the SEA mess ended 25 years ago! I think I've cribbed together a farily complete EC-47 S/N list and have obtained some other interesting stuff, but there are still a lot of gaps in my info. Anyhow, I'd sure like to hear from any other EC-47 vets. |
